Copyright infringement is illegal for both companies and individuals. Here are 7 tips to help you avoid copyright infringement and get your business on the right track.

  1. Understanding who owns what content

Duplication, adaptation and redraw: what’s the difference?

Reproducing an illustration refers to using it in exactly the same way as it was previously published.

Personalization refers to making changes (adding or removing information) to the previously published form.

Find the person

The first thing you need to do is find the person’s web server so you know where to file your DMCA complaint. An easy way to do this is to look up the IP address of the website. You can ping or use a free online tool like Domain Tools. In this example below, we are using a website hosted by Kinsta on Google Cloud Platform. You can see that Domain Tools easily shows us the IP address of the domain we are looking for.

You can then take the IP address and look it up using the ARIN Whois service. They have a good database of logs and feedback on which IPs belong to which companies. You can see in this example, once we look up the IP address, it immediately shows us that it’s on a network block used by Google Cloud customers and the email address and the abuse report web page.

Text Violation

Text violations come in large and small forms, from uploading entire manuscripts to stealing copies from a website or social media account. Any content you write and post online can be copied and violated online, which is especially dangerous in fraud cases. Fraudsters can copy text from existing brand websites to create fake websites and identity accounts that defraud consumers.

Scammers upload music and movies and make them available for free on illegal sites. This is a major problem for the music and movie industries, which lose millions in revenue every year due to illegal streaming. Scammers don’t just target the big names, even indie creators who upload their music or movies online can steal their content.
