Jay-Z turns 40 in a few months. It’s interesting because that age is mistakenly seen in hip-hop as the onset of senility, not wisdom, and the genre is probably the most age-appropriate of all. He lives fast, dies young, relate to the youth, fuck the old guard. But the rap game is in an interesting transition period: The old guard still retains much of its fan base while shelving the occasional impressive effort that makes young critics swoon at “rolling back the years.” Then you have relatively young people like Drake, Kid Cudi and co being proclaimed legends by kids who just don’t know any better: they have yet to release any albums at this point, so sit back and let them get on with it. And here we are with another Jigga effort, the seventh proper of the decade and, for some strange reason, the last in the apparent ‘Blueprint trilogy’. Make no mistake though, this one has practically nothing to do with the original.

Ever since The Blueprint 3 leaked just over a week ago, everyone has been rushing to post their own reviews online and the reviews have been incredibly mixed, which may have forced Camp Carter to change the Release date to increase to the regular Tuesday date, as opposed to Friday 9/11. The die-hard fan base was generally pleased, declaring it another classic – the rest of the world considered it a Roc Nation abomination. A select few are firmly hedging their bets, allowing themselves to listen to the album more than once on their laptop speakers. After all, this is a huge launch from an industry giant. The last time Eminem and Jay-Z released a full-length solo LP in the same year? 2002 – “The Eminem Show” and “The Blueprint 2.” The meaning of that? They are the two best-selling rappers of the decade, despite both taking long breaks. In other words, Em and Jigga can take 8 years off together and still be the two best rappers alive (other MCs need to up their game in the next decade).
