Sampling history owes a lot to Hank Shocklee and the Bomb Squad. The idea of ​​sampling existed in one form or another as the art of recording evolved, from adding textures and effects to rock albums, through musical instruments like the mellotron and fairchild, to the experimental music concrete movement of the 1940s. But until the 1980s, sampling never really existed as an integral part of a popular genre and it certainly wasn’t the art form it is today. There was a catastrophe of aesthetics, technology, and curious minds that began to explore all angles of possibility. Shocklee and his collaborators are credited with advancing the art of sampling using techniques such as warping and multiband microloop sampling, pioneering an approach that can obscure the original source while creating something sonic new. From his work with Public Enemy to creating musical worlds for movies, we spoke with Hank Shocklee about his early explorations, current projects, and what he’s most excited about for the future of sampling.
