Have you ever downloaded a file from the Internet and worried that it might be infected with malware?

This is a real problem these days with all the malware floating around the internet.

Simplify: integrate VirusTotal into your browser

Did you know that, like all other utilities, VirusTotal has a web plugin? The service comes with browser extensions that easily integrate VirusTotal into your browser, allowing you to right-click on any web page and then select the Scan with VirusTotal option. You don’t have to go the long route of visiting the VirusTotal website and copying and pasting the link.

VirusTotal browser extensions may be compatible with various browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Open your web browser and download the correct extension for that browser, right click on the link and select the option to quickly scan and see the results.

Virus scanning is just a tool in your tool belt

Just because a virus scanner doesn’t find a virus doesn’t mean a file is virus-free. Some viruses and malware can express themselves in sophisticated ways and hide from virus scanners. Others download malicious code when they run. Others may be zero-day viruses, which means that definition files do not yet exist to verify them.

As a result of these issues, around 2015, the antivirus software market began to move away from purely definition-based detection to incorporate behavioral detection.

Method 1: Direct Scan

Some antivirus products offer the ability to scan a file directly. You can tell if your file has this capability by right-clicking on a file and telling it to scan with (AV software name). After you download a file, you can do this to the file and ask it to be scanned, and the AV product will scan it and determine if it is a malicious file. However, this method is not malware-proof. Stealthy malware can go undetected, so it may be safer to use an additional method.

You can use free software called VirusTotal to check links for malware, even before you click them, and files you’ve already downloaded.
