It’s probably wise to start with a disclaimer: I love Hozier to an almost sick degree. Other than that, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Wasteland, Baby!, Hozier’s first album in five years, as if it were the birth of my own child. Now that the full album has dropped on March 1st, I can confidently say that after years of forcing fans to constantly recycle material from his 2014 self-titled album, Hozier has produced work of the same astonishing beauty and delivered lyrical power. that made his first so memorable.
Although each song deserves its own section, I am going to address the most outstanding ones. Months before the album’s release, Hozier released the lead single “Nina Cried Power” featuring Mavis Staples. An ode to civil rights activists, including Staples himself, the song sounds less acoustic than most of Hozier’s work and signals a newer, more powerful style that he explores on this album. This technique works best on the song “Movement,” my personal favorite on this album, which blends calm, lyrically powerful verses with a soaring, impactful chorus.
