Why this massive reaction?
For different reasons:
- Nobody likes to be forced to use a service or told what to do. Kanye West has done it to the extreme and thus on the Internet a very clear provocation.
- Linked to the above, limiting the release of a puck to a single platform is a shot in the foot. Fans love their Favorite Artists a lot, but they’re not stupid enough to just follow directions.
- Kanye West scored a line with Twitter-Outs. That way of ordering ‘white media’ like Rolling Stone or Pitchfork not to review ‘never again’ music ‘by blacks’; warn that he would not go to the Grammys if they did not guarantee him the award for best album; and, in general, all those tweets that have been published in recent days, only reaffirm what we have already discussed: that he is self-centered, eccentric and arrogant. And, of course, comes a performance on SNL and you don’t know his own lyrics (versus Kendrick Lamar’s stellar performance last night at the Grammys). This creates rejection for people and is almost an incentive for them to hack the disco.
