The quiet town of Seize is located on the outskirts of the state of Helvetia. Citizens go about their daily lives on the cobbled streets, undisturbed by the increasingly tense military relations between Helvetia and the neighboring Roman Empire.

Under these circumstances, the 1121 platoon of the Swiss Army, based at the Clock Tower Fortress in Seize, receives a new recruit in the young and energetic Kanata Sorami. After joining the army to fulfill his dream of learning to play the bugle, he eagerly accepts the tutelage of Master Sergeant Rio Kazumiya, who happens to be a talented trumpet player. Working alongside her are the aloof mechanic Noël Kannagi, the feisty marksman Kureha Suminoya, and the compassionate captain Felicia Heideman; Together they experience the beauty of life at Seize and the enduring joy of a community that has persevered despite the crumbling world around them.
