If there is one figure that we will all agree to consider universally iconic in the world of rock and metal, it is undoubtedly that of Lemmy Kilmister. The big English vocalist suffered as he wanted, he epitomized sex, drugs and rock and roll like no one else, he left a lot of phrases for history, he transcended the sphere of music itself to become a world reference that enjoyed the admiration and recognition throughout the world thanks to his authenticity and charisma and, finally, he ended up achieving an immortal status and aura that, paradoxically and tragically, was consumed with devastating and impotent rapidity to end up leaving us at the age of seventy, an age still very young for someone we all trusted would live forever.
Behind the immensity of his person and his character, of course, there was Motörhead, the trio (at times a quartet) that he led and personalized so extensively for forty years. Faced with a figure as gigantic as his, the musical production of his band takes a position to a certain extent secondary, and despite the fact that the influence of Londoners in the future of the most aggressive rock is evidently great, it is also undeniable that the respect and the adulation that Lemmy and Motörhead enjoy among the rock community does not usually correspond to the recognition they have in the eminently musical. Motörhead are cool, of course, and their brand and symbology have transcended all styles and are even cool, but when it comes to talking about music, for many they are too dirty, too punk or too simple to completely agree with their proposal.
The cover
On the cover it would disappear from the foreground for the first time (it does appear on the badge Phil is wearing) Snaggletooth, the band’s mascot designed by artist Joe Petagno, who remembered in this interview the genesis of the creature: “The inspiration came because I’m a pissed-off bastard! And Lemmy is great! So it was meant to be an alchemical wedding of a ‘more primitive nature’. I did a lot of research on the types.” of skulls and discover that a gorilla-wolf-dog breed X combo would work well with some oversized boar horns. Lemmy added helmet, chains, spit, spikes, and sand.”
In a photo of the trio, posing in true cowboy style as if they were in the Arizona desert. In a property in a sand quarry in Barnet, a municipality north of London. Lemmy joked with the idea that all the moon landings could be there in this 2004 interview with Dr. Rock, where he also assures that the sky we see “is real sky.” It was one of those rare sunny days at the end of summer. It was a good photo session. It really did look like fucking Arizona, didn’t it?
