In 2012, Japanese developer Sen created a free horror story that resonated with the entire community. Developed with WOLF RPG Editor (similar to RPG Maker), it quickly gained a following that expanded beyond Japan. This expansion partly addressed the intense hunger for indie horror games of the time, as well as a fan translation. Four years later, Playism has brought back the Mad Father download with a number of improvements and sells it both on its own store and on Steam. While it’s no longer free to download, the low price matches the multitude of game updates and classic graphics.
So what is the Mad Father download? It doesn’t take long to figure out what the title of the game is all about. In the opening sequence, we meet a young woman named Aya who is sneaking out near her father’s lab. Screams emanate from the locked room and the player immediately realizes that her father is not a nice guy. Little Aya knows her father’s deadly secret, but she still loves him very much. Now that her mother is dead, her father is all she has left in the world. Somehow it’s getting a lot worse for both of them. For unknown reasons, the ghosts suddenly appear and take her father with them. It’s up to Aya to brave the suddenly spooky mansion and rescue him from his ghostly clutches. Thus begins the story of Mad Father Download.
