Time neither forgives, nor does it have a shred of mercy. Similar to Music works way. The years go by and those movements that seemed robust as a rock end up being lifted by the wind. What happened to grunge? And with the britpop of the nineties? Terrible fate is also suffered by one of the most robust genres of the past. I’m talking specifically about the blues, featuring brilliant chord progressions and beautiful synergies established between glassy guitars and rhythmic drum bases. I’m not fooling anyone if I say that this crossbreed fusion of rhythms and styles no longer enjoys the popularity of yesteryear. Perhaps the continuous twists and turns that materialized between the seventies and the eighties were the ones that established geniuses of the profile of Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughan as the last heroes of this sector. From them the titans that have appeared on the scene no longer have the size, nor the charisma, nor the genius of the great artists mentioned above.
Since the year 2000 he has not identified any existing blues club that he is enjoying with those released thirty years ago. One of the few albums that still (some of us) continues to tickle our stomachs is «Continuum». Do you remember? Just today this LP released by John Mayer 10 years ago since September 12, 2006 on planet Earth. It was surprising, and a lot, because to a large extent this third album came to confirm that the composer was not just that innocent and talkative pop artist who hit the US charts with gimmicky singles, like “Your Body Is A Wonderland” or “Daughters”. “Continuum” was a turning point in his career. A very relevant one, in which Mayer had to let himself be carried away by the spirit of his great idol (Ray Vaughan) in order to get closer, at least temporarily, to a refined but robust blues. Of striking color, but in which we also identify a most sober integrated.
