Every two years or so Jason Isbell delivers new material, every two years a large majority applaud his songs and elevate the new album by the former drive-by-truckers among the best of the year and, of course, every two years a Yours truly hopes that his new job will completely disarm him although, to be honest, he never quite succeeds. His new album appeared in 2017, “The Nashville Sound”, it is no exception. The album has an above-average quality, it’s obvious, and it has, a priori, all the ingredients to make me fall in love but… I don’t know why but with Isbell I always have a but, it doesn’t just fool me, nor drive me crazy, nor give me goosebumps. Three were the records of the so-called “American” that came into my hands at the same time before the summer. Three highly anticipated discos: Steve Earle with “If you wanna be an outlaw”, Jason Isbell with “The Nasville Sound” and Justin Townes Earle with “Kids in the Streets”; of these three only Earle Junior makes me pale. The rest, yes, okay, but not to drive me crazy. There are always good songs but in general I almost prefer Drew Holcomb’s album, «Souvenir», which has won me over the top with listening. In any case, we are talking about very good works, let’s not be snobbish, Isbell’s album is a very good album, much better, but much better than his previous collection of songs «Something more than free». The new songs have more hook and personality although they always sound like Ryan Adams in eighties mode. One quality that this new album by Isbell has is that it grows with each passing day, and that it has, at least, a list of outstanding songs, which undoubtedly justifies why people have applauded and celebrated the arrival of this new collection of songs, but I don’t think it’s enough to put it among the best albums of the year, although it may be that when winter arrives a server will have changed his mind. The beautiful «Last of my kind» is the album with the perfection of the American tradition, between Lamontagne and Adams, a delight of the theme that I have so much confused with a brutal album, that album that I am passionate about Isbell. Cumberland Gap is an innovative magical atmospheric adventure built on the underlying theme of Springsteen’s Rock-Ochsenter and the sequel to Ryan Adams’ Point of the… Umbrella. No, I’m passionate about it. It sounds and it’s okay, it’s not a bad song, but it doesn’t excite me, it doesn’t give me tempera, it’s not one of those songs that disarms you. Tupelo is something else. It’s wonderful, why not say it, and once again with the little tone Lamontagne for a hat. And then, once again, he gives us another lively song, but this time “White man’s world” is to my liking, maybe because of that Dad Earle construction. Wed’s favorite song on the album is “Si fueramos vampiros”, pure jewellery. “Anxiety” that speeds up the pulse again after the calm is another huge hit, confirming that from “Tupelo” to it the album is outstanding and then it goes down, in my opinion of level. “Fear” is pure eighties, pure epic radioable rock from that time and despite that, I like it. “Molotov” is more than Adams, and too many memories go to country rock’s terrible child. The best of the finale is the delicacy of “Chaos and clothes” that wins integers with each listen, precious. “Hope the high road” repeats formula and is a little boring while the country result of “Something to love” for the closing hits but doesn’t convince me. In short, this is a good album, or more than good, a remarkable album that I personally don’t quite fall in love with, there is something, I don’t know what makes me not go crazy listening to it, maybe Isbell is on the brakes handheld, maybe it lacks spark, to the disc or to him, or to both.
