“The slot machines were louder than the speakers they gave us”
“We were playing in front of these blackjack dealers in bikinis and guys sitting on the slot machines,” said frontman Dan Reynolds to Rolling Stone in 2013. “The ding-ding-ding of the slot machines was louder than the little speakers that didn’t give. We did four nights a week and they gave us $400 for the six hours. That gave us enough money to pay the rent and eat Top Ramen or Taco Bell.”
However, in the same way that Hamburg’s sleazy bar-dumping routine honed The Beatles, these subsistence-level gigs laid the foundation for Imagine Dragons’ later success. Tracks from Night Visions, along with the mandolin-token “It’s Time” and “Amsterdam,” charted first on the perpetual band’s setlist, then with classics by The Rolling Stones, The Autos and The Cure.
