After a long silence, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett put an end to Gorillaz’s engines with the new album “Humanz”. Seven years passed before Damon Albarn decided to return to the music business, but not with Blur or as a soloist, but with the virtual band that he created in the late 90s and led to the realization with a first album in 2001. Gorillaz is one of the most important musical groups of our generation, this may seem strange considering that its members do not really exist. Damon and his animator, Jamie Hewlett, have been able to take music to a point where not only is it almost impossible to classify it in a genre (leading some simplists to just call it ‘pop’), but they have achieved a level of quality where, although not all the albums are excellent, none is really bad. This week the band’s fifth studio album, titled Humanz, was released, where the tracklist made up of 26 tracks, which are divided into 7 interludes and 19 songs, navigates through different musical styles, while still having a clear melodic homogeneity, to the point where it can be assured that in a few years, one will be able to listen to a song from this album and immediately recognize that it belongs to it. Something that is perceived in the first listening to this album is that Damon Albarn does not have such an immense vocal presence as in other discos, leading to the fact that the collaborating artists are in charge of singing in most of the songs. But this is not significant that Damon in a stroke of laziness has decided that the others do all the work, his presence on the synthesizers in all the songs is very noticeable. Musically speaking, the style of the album plays a lot with electronic sounds. Becoming a very marked imprint in all the themes; however, Damon specified that the sound of each synthesizer note is the one required by the songs in a completely natural way. Among the Singers that Collaborate on Humanz are rich in rappers or R&B singers, going through De la Soul to Peven Everett. Going through the singer of Ragga Popcaan and the bluesman Rag N’ Bone Man. Although in recent days there has been much talk about the club having an excess of collaborations, no appearance is too much. Gorillaz’s grace borders more than anything on the mix of styles, and what better way to mark this with the collaboration of artists from different genres? In a series of themes played immediately with the singles Andromeda, Saturnz Barz and Let Me Out and themes associated with the best album and Charger, Carnival and Out of Body stand out. The Disc isn’t perfect and there are some tracks that don’t get as much attention, like the somewhat disappointing Momentz or Halfway To The Halfway House. But, in general, there is no bad track, some need to be listened to more than once and the listener’s patience to end up loving them. Humanz may not be liked at all, or won’t fall in love at first glance, but once you’ve listened to it two or three times, you really start to feel the musical impact of this record. This album is a gift from Damon and Jamie that we should be grateful to have since, after seven long years, it has returned to musical quality, to the feeling that each song surprises you as the record progresses and, above all, to discover New artists are part of the collaborations. Gorillaz is back!
