Production is a delicate field. For one, a great producer can totally turn an average or flimsy idea into a great song. On the other hand, a bad producer can ruin the original potential of the track. This can happen either by overtaking the creative process, not doing enough to drive it forward, or by overproducing it with generic beats and walls of sound that erase the artist’s musical identity. It’s this third scenario that stings on Ellie Goulding’s debut album, Lights.
There is a group of producers and writers involved in the creation of this record. The one who will stand out the most when you read the album credits is Starsmith, an English producer better known for his remixes than for his recording work. In fact, Goulding’s album is one of the first where she played a major role in terms of songwriting and sound. He co-wrote just under half of the album and produced a whopping nine out of eleven tracks. The result is that most of what makes Goulding’s work compelling, like her vocals and instrumentation, gets lost among the generic synths that turn these songs into standard pop music. (For the record, this is a review of the US version of the album, not the original UK release.)
