I have to add that the first time I heard Symbolic I didn’t like it too much. Back then I was just a kid, my musical education was still scarce and what I asked of extreme metal was simply to be fast, direct and aggressive. I had the same reaction with the other late Death albums, as well as with groups like Atheist or Cynic. It seemed to me that this was a way of making accessible to the metal audience, traditionally stereotyped as chauvinistic and not very open, techniques and resources from other more sophisticated or advanced genres. If you prefer Scream Bloody Gore, you can also listen to a big car, and you can listen to more or listen to experimental music and other tips. I did not learn to appreciate the marvelousness of this fact, how fascinating it is to see how Death approaches such disparate approaches to an audience dedicated to dark and primitive sounds, until I set myself the task of carrying out a more rigorous and systematic study of The history of heavy metal.
I see Symbolic as a work that culminates a trend started by Death since Human and clearly visible in Individual thinking patterns, such as the deepening of the most accessible classical influences of a music that was not raised listening to Death Metal… because Death Metal didn’t exist then. I think the importance of Death in extreme metal in general, while it has always been recognized and underlined, is often not properly defined. This happens with many of his albums. In the symbolic scene there is a club that, at one time and in a general existence, offers taste for the panorama to blow between extreme metal and the great classic. It was not a universal phenomenon, of course, but in 1995 Slaughter of the Soul, Storm of the Light’s Bane, The Angel and the Dark River or The Gallery appeared. Chuck Schuldiner handled very well in Symbolic the heavy metal influences that he already showed in the previous album, and this made it surely his most accessible and easy to listen to.
