“Music now plays a very different role in people’s lives”
Do you feel like a new band with Justin Harris (bass) and Louise Bartle (drums) on board? Nr. For me Nr. I think the transition has been really easy. They are a really brilliant pair of musicians and lovely to spend time with too. They have joined and have taken their time to learn our catalog so that we could start playing. I think the people who come to see us play will be able to see how good they are and how much they enjoy each other on stage. It feels very good. Now there is very good chemistry between us. He played with many musicians. No, it’s only in Bloc Party in the last 10 or 15 years. As long as they are competent with his instrument, I see it as easy to get along. The transition has been really easy, probably easier than anyone would have expected.
Are you coming to the disco with Tim Bran and Roy Kerr? It was very good. Everyone has said that it has probably been one of the easiest recording experiences they’ve ever had. They are charming, talented people too and each one a specialist in their area. Roy comes from a more electronic background and has helped us with all the programming and effects; Tim is more live oriented and gets takes and sounds in this aspect. Having two people with different perspectives together is great; certainly for a band like us it’s perfect, because it’s always been our way of working: the combination of live music, organic music and electronics has been part of Bloc Party since day one. For the recording, we spent a few weeks rehearsing the songs and we took advantage of the form and when we got to the studio we had everything done in a matter of weeks. Which gave us some free time, which is quite rare when you shoot, because normally you’re always in a rush to get things finished, you’re up until 2 in the morning trying to get takes… But it’s been a very smooth shoot.
