How app developers make money: free or paid

When developing an app there are many important questions to ask and consider, and the decision to offer a paid app or a free app is an important question.

Finally, people tend to try an app before they buy it, and most of the time a similar app already exists for free.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is the most common way podcasters earn money. This is when the podcast promotes the sponsor during the show. You probably hear that your favorite shows turn on their advertisers multiple times each episode.

The amount you earn from a sponsor depends on the number of downloads your episodes get. Sponsors pay on a cost-per-thousand basis (mille is Latin for “thousand”). Prices range from $18 to $50 CPM, although very popular podcasts can cost much more.

Apple App Store Availability

As I just said, the mobile app industry is very competitive.

But how many applications will you compete with? Take a look at the number of apps available on the Apple App Store.

Maximizing Profits from PPD Sites

As mentioned above, the first thing you should do is choose a site and test it. My test process looks like this:

  1. Create a small test file. I am using an eBook in PDF format. Be sure to check the hash and file size of the file.
  2. Create your account and see what kind of information you need. If they ask you for something you don’t want to give, don’t give it to them.
  3. Upload your test file and see how the process works.
  4. Use a proxy to simulate a visit from another location and check the link in a few different browsers. I’m using Chrome and Safari with extensions disabled to see what it would look like with Adblock and Noscript disabled.
  5. Try again with your script and/or ad blockers enabled to see how easy it is to avoid monetization.
  6. Download the file and compare the hash and size with the original to make sure it hasn’t been bundled with malware or otherwise embedded a virus.
